Back to our accommodation.Dinner to the nearby Restaurant ‘’Tre Stelle’’ with homemade Pici (a typical hand-made pasta of Southern Tuscany) and Chianina steak.

Strolling around the beautiful square ”Piazza del Campo” we will have time for shopping and for a light lunch. At 6pm we will return to our accommodation in Montepulciano.
Sep 5 -Day 4 MONTERIGGIONI SAN GIMIGNANO.Around 9:00am, departure for a visit to Monteriggioni.
Before entering the castle we will have a light lunch in local deli with cheeses and cold cuts.
Monteriggioni The impression that remains in the memory, visiting this place, lasts forever. One realizes that he has discovered a magical place, almost an enchanted castle like those that are known in fairy tales, as children. Arriving at the village in the evening, when the outer walls are illuminated by yellow lights, Monteriggioni seems almost a mirage in the middle of the Tuscan hills: the walls and the 14 suggestive towers, hugging her like a hug. They are still intact, just like when they were built in the Middle Ages to defend and protect the inhabitants of the place.
Then we will reach Chiusdino to visit SAN GALGANO ABBEY and discover one of the best well kept secret in Tuscany: The sword in the rock.
Abbey of San Galgano The Abbey of Saint Galgano was a Cistercian Monastery found in the valley of the river Merse between the towns of Chiusdino and Monticiano, in the province of Siena, Tuscany.Presently, the roofless walls of the Gothic style 13th-century Abbey church still stand. Nearby are the chapel or Eremo or Rotonda di Montesiepi (1185), the tomb of Saint Galgano and the purported site of his death in 1181, the sword said to have been planted in the ground by Galgano and a chapel with frescoes by Ambrogio Lorenzetti.
We will finish our day tour visiting the medieval town of San Gimignano where we will have time for shopping and for a visit to Dondoli Gelateria enjoying the world’s famous “gelato” ice cream that is the favorite supplier of Queen Elizabeth . Dinner: Pizza night with my friend Roberto.
Sep 6 -Day 5 MAREMMA. Today we drive toward the Tyrrhenian Sea Coast. The Southernmost area of Tuscany is known as the Maremma.
The general term Maremma is today used to indicate a vast geographical area that covers both parts of Tuscany and Lazio near the Tyrrhenian coast. It can be considered as the Maremma in Tuscany, the Maremma in Lazio and the Maremma area covering Grosseto.Once unhealthy because of its many marshes, Maremma was drained under the fascist regime and repopulated with people from other Italian regions.
In Maremma we will visit the ‘Area del Tufo’ (the tuff area) including the town of Pitigliano (inhabited since Etruscan times , perched atop a volcanic tufa ridge and called the Little Jerusalem , Piccola Gerusalemme, due to the long-standing presence of a Jewish community and then we will stop to the close town of Sorana another Etruscan center that retains great archaeological reserves.
Sep 7 – Day 6 FLORENCE.After breakfast we will say goodbye to Roberto and Manuela and by train we get to Florence for a day tour discovering the Cradle of The Renaissance, visiting the major attractions such Uffizi Gallery and Accademia Gallery (admiring the worldwide famous statue the David of Michelangelo) and shopping around the San Lorenzo market and Via Tornabuoni.
Around 5:00pm by minivan we will reach Lucca.Check-in to our accommodation Villa La Cappella,on the hill overlooking Lucca’ valley.Dinner in hotel.
Sep 8 – Day 7 LUCCA. After breakfast we will visit Lucca and Sauro will introduce you to his own native town.Lunch and Dinner in two typical Restaurant in Lucca.
Lucca is a city on the Serchio river in Italy’s Tuscany region. It’s known for the well-preserved Renaissance walls encircling its historic city center and its cobblestone streets. Broad, tree-lined pathways along the tops of these massive 16th- and 17th-century ramparts are popular for strolling and cycling.
Cars are not permitted in a large proportion of Lucca, and walkers and cyclists seem to circulate together along winding streets that more often than not cause visitors to get a little lost.
Lucca rivals Florence and Pisa in culture and beauty, and tends to attract somewhat more “discerning” visitors; at least because it’s off the beaten path. Still, it’s relatively accessible to and from other places, including the seaside towns of Viareggio and Pisa, which are only minutes away by train. Lucca doesn’t move fast for anyone, its inhabitants do everything at leisure and it’s impossible for visitors not to do the same—nowhere and nobody in Italy seems to do relaxation better than those born and bred in Lucca.
SEP 9 – Day 8 BAGNI DI LUCCA AND GARFAGNANA. Today we will visit some of the most beautiful areas in Lucca Province.
First Stop : The Val di Lima and Bagni di Lucca
The Val di Lima, the valley of the river Lima, is a beautiful green area of northern Tuscany located some 20 km from the city of Lucca. The main town of the region is Bagni di Lucca, a historic old spa with long-standing international connections. Bagni di Lucca is one of the largest mountain communities in Italy covering over 16,000 hectares with over 75% of the area covered with deciduous trees.
Bagni di Lucca has been known for its thermal springs since the Etruscan and Roman ages and had been visited by poets and writers, such as Byron, Shelley, Montale, Dumas, Heine, Lamartine and Ouida, the great Paganini and among the European nobility, Napoleon and his beautiful sister Paolina. Young Puccini worked there as a pianist in the local casino, and then, as an adult he came back there to relax in the quiet of the place. The landscape of Bagni di Lucca influenced the maestro for the music of La Fanciulla del West and the last project of Turandot.
Second stop: The Garfagnana
The Garfagnana is the upper valley or basin of the river Serchio, and thus lies between the Northern Apennines’ main ridge to the North-East and the Alpi Apuane to the West. It has heavy rainfall and is densely wooded. The principal towns are Castelnuovo di Garfagnana and Barga.
Then we will visit the town of Barga and the Verrucole Castle.
Third stop: Barga
Barga is nestled in the green mountains much further north of Lucca. There are no typically Tuscan rolling hills here, and very few tourists, either. However is one of the most interesting places to visit in the area.Seriously steep and too narrow for cars, the little streets wind undisturbed up the hill, sometimes suddenly replaced by a steep set of stairs instead.Until you reach the beautiful cathedral from which you can enjoy an incredible panorama of the valley.
Fourth stop: Verrucole Castle
The fortress of Verrucole has recently undergone partial restoration. The territory of the fortress has been restored to give an understanding of the Medieval way of life. The keep has undergone more considerable reconstruction with exhibits on different aspects of Medieval life, including food, medicine, and warfare. We will have the chance to learn about the day by day life in Medieval time and we will enjoy a glass of real apple cider in the lovely taverna serving drinks and light refreshments. Much of the fort is decorated and fitted out as in the old days, giving a nice flavor of the place.
Back to our accommodation and dinner in nearby restaurant.
SEP 10 – Day 9 APUANE ALPS AND THE VILLAGE OF COLONNATA. Today we will leave Lucca driving toward the sea and the we will take the road that from the port of Carrara brings to Colonnata on the Apuane Alps.
The Apuan Alps are a mountain range in northern Tuscany, Italy, part of the Apennine Mountains. They are included between the valleys of the Serchio and Magra rivers, and, to north-west, the Garfagnana and Lunigiana. The name derives from that of the Apuani Ligures tribe who lived here in ancient times. The chain formed in the middle Triassic period, somewhat earlier than the rest of the Apennines, and on a rather different geological structure, formed by a sea landscape. Karst topography is widespread, as well as the marble rocks (including the world famous Carrara marble) for which the area is renowned.
Once arrived in Colonnata we will have an incredible lunch tasting the world famous Lardo di Colonnata (Lard of Colonnata) and Pecorino di Fossa (Pecorino cheese aged in caves).
The lard has a white, almost rose-colored appearance;sometimes you might be lucky enough to find the so-called “streak” of intense pink colour that increases its visual beauty and adds extra flavor. The upper part is covered in a thick layer of sea salt, which is grey-black in appearance thanks to the spices in which it is drenched. The storage and curing of the Lardo di Colonnata are unique. The marble mold is made of a specific type of marble that comes from one marble-cutter, called Canaloni, in the region of Colonnata. It is considered the best for curing the Lardo.
Afterward we will experience something extraordinarily unique: CARRARA MARBLE QUARRIES GUIDED TOUR BY 4X4 VEHICLES.
The marble quarries are, enormous white wounds that open themselves along wild and abrupt slopes, where small men handle gigantic stone blocks. For the last 2000 years here nature and man’s work daily embrace and reject each other in order to supply the raw material for architectural and artistic works that embellish the squares, the palaces, and the private buildings all over the world.
The world of marble is not just the excavation or processing of a stone, but the history of a territory and its population that have been synonyms of marble it self for ages. The quarries, the techniques and the history as well as the quarrymen’s villages, their thousand-year habits and customs, their language their food and everyday life. The guided tour to the marble quarries will allow you, in absolute safety, to get in touch directly with the people, places, instruments, machineries and daily gestures of an ancient knowledge.
At the end of the tour we will stop on the coast for an unforgettable seafood dinner.
Return in Lucca to our accommodation.
SEP 11 – Day 10 VERSILIA AND CINQUE TERRE
During this day Sauro will introduce you to the best kept secrets of the Tyrrhenian coast, from Viareggio to Monterosso al Mare in Cinque Terre. We will drive along the coastal road that reach the Ligurian Region border and then to La Spezia port. There we will board on a ferry that will bring us to Cinque Terre where we will spend the day strolling around the villages. There will be time to shopping and for a light lunch.
Viareggio is well known for its golden beaches, Puccini house and theatre in Torre del Lago(Massaciuccoli lake) its mild climate, the Liberty stile of the front beach villas and amazing nightlife. It is known as a seaside resort as well as being the home of the famous carnival of Viareggio (dating back to 1873), and its papier-mâché floats, which (since 1925), parade along the promenade known as “Passeggiata a mare”, in the weeks preceding Easter.
Unlike the sandy beaches on the Tuscan side, the Ligurian coast features a dramatic line of steep cliffs where 5 small fisherman villages are set in the rock like diamonds in a gold ring.
SEP 12 – Day 11 Rome In the morning we leave Lucca by minivan and we reach Florence where we will get a high-speed train directed to Rome. Accommodation to our hotel in the centre of the city.Dinner to a typical Roman Trattoria.
