Arrival to Pisa International Airport. Meeting with Sauro. Transfer to Lucca and accommodation to Hotel La Cappella
During this part of the trip Sauro will introduce you to his native land of Lucca, the Val di Lima and Garfagnana. Sauro was born in Bagni di Lucca and then moved in Viareggio. One whole day tour will be dedicated to Florence and to its incomparable beauty.
The Val di Lima and Bagni di Lucca
The Val di Lima, the valley of the river Lima, is a beautiful green area of northern Tuscany located some 20km from the city of Lucca.
The main town of the region is Bagni di Lucca, a historic old spa with long-standing international connections. Bagni di Lucca is one of the largest mountain communities in Italy covering over 16,000 hectares with over 75% of the area covered with deciduous trees.
Bagni di Lucca has been known for its thermal springs since the Etruscan and Roman ages and had been visited by poets and writers, such as Byron, Shelley, Montale, Dumas, Heine, Lamartine and Ouida, the great Paganini and among the European nobility, Napoleon and his beautiful sister Paolina. Young Puccini worked there as a pianist in the local casino, and then, as an adult he came back there to relax in the quiet of the place. The landscape of Bagni di Lucca influenced the maestro for the music of La Fanciulla del West and the last project of Turandot.
The Garfagnana is a historical and geographical region of central Italy, today part of the province of Lucca, in Tuscany. It is the upper valley or basin of the river Serchio, and thus lies between the Northern Apennines’ main ridge to the North-East and the Alpi Apuane to the West. It has heavy rainfall and is densely wooded. The principal towns are Castelnuovo di Garfagnana and Barga.
The Apuane Alps
The Apuan Alps are a mountain range in northern Tuscany, Italy, part of the Apennine Mountains. They are included between the valleys of the Serchio and Magra rivers, and, to north-west, the Garfagnana and Lunigiana. The name derives from that of the Apuani Ligures tribe who lived here in ancient times.
The chain formed in the middle Triassic period, somewhat earlier than the rest of the Apennines, and on a rather different geological structure, formed by a sea landscape. Karst topography is widespread, as well as the marble rocks (including the world famous Carrara marble) for which the area is renowned.
Lake of Vagli and its legend : A ghost town submerged under the lake.
A ghost town is submerged beneath the waters of Lake Vagli, which emerges every ten years when the lake is cleaned for maintenance work. The lake is, in fact, artificial and was created in 1946, unluckily for the town of Fabbriche di Carreggine, which had to be flooded. The dam, which was built to contain the water of the lake, generates hydroelectric power and the lake is also used as a reservoir in case of fires in the area. The inhabitants were all transferred to the nearby town of Vagli di Sotto, which looks over the lake, and then the town of Fabbriche di Carreggine and its twelfth century buildings disappeared forever.
Today, it’s possible to walk the streets of this strange underwater town just once every ten years when the lake is emptied for maintenance work. The lake has been emptied in 1958, 1974, 1983, 1994 and most recently in 2004. Fabbriche di Carreggine emerges spookily from he water with its stone buildings all still intact, the cemetery, the bridge and the church of Saint Theodore with its ruined bell tower. The town has been completely frozen in time for the last fifty years and only shows off its ghostly buildings once every decade.
Lucca and Puccini
Lucca, Italy is a beautiful town surrounded by a 12 metres thick and 25 metres high 16th century wall, which runs around Lucca’s perimeter and protects the city. On top of the wall is a boardwalk and bike path, and there’s no better way to admire the city than to walk or cycle around the giant wall, whilst viewing some of Italy’s finest medieval and Renaissance architecture.
Cars are not permitted in a large proportion of Lucca, and walkers and cyclists seem to circulate together along winding streets that more often than not cause visitors to get a little lost.
Lucca rivals Florence and Pisa in culture and beauty, and tends to attract somewhat more “discerning” visitors; at least because it’s off the beaten path. Still, it’s relatively accessible to and from other places, including the seaside towns of Viareggio and Pisa, which are only minutes away by train. Lucca doesn’t move fast for anyone, its inhabitants do everything at leisure and it’s impossible for visitors not to do the same—nowhere and nobody in Italy seems to do relaxation better than those born and bred in Lucca.
With the sun on your face, baking the old buildings in the historic center, the soft sounds of Madam Butterfly playing from an open window behind shutters, it’s easy to imagine what must have inspired Giacomo Puccini to become one of the most artistic composers in history.
Puccini was born in a house in Corte San Lorenzo 22nd December 1858, and it was within that house in Lucca that he spent the first 22 years of his life. He was born into a family with five generations of musicians.
The house Puccini was born in is now a museum managed by the Giacomo Puccini Foundation, and it contains many of the composer’s personal items, such as furniture, awards and letters between Puccini and his wife Elvira.
Sat Sep 22 to Wed Sep 26
Viareggio and Cinque Terre
Transfer by minibus from Bagni di Lucca to Marina di Pietrasanta and accommodation to beachfront Hotel Savoy.
Viareggio is a city and comune in northern Tuscany, Italy, on the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea. With a population of over 64,000, it is the second largest city within the province of Lucca, after only Lucca city.
It is known as a seaside resort as well as being the home of the famous carnival of Viareggio (dating back to 1873), and its papier-mâché floats, which (since 1925), parade along the promenade known as “Passeggiata a mare”, in the weeks preceding Easter.
The entire area of Viareggio extends over the coastal flooding plain of Versilia. Located on the Tyrrhenian Sea it has 10 kilometres (6.2 miles) of sandy beaches, of which 6 kilometres (3.7 miles) are managed by private beach resorts and the remaining 4 kilometres (2.5 miles) are public.
During these days spent on the coast Sauro will introduce you to the best kept secrets of the Versilia area, such as the Liberty houses, the colored Cinque Terre’s fishermen villages, the wine farms on the hills between Viareggio and Lucca, the beachfront VIP’s mansions (including Bocelli’s one) and the marble quarries where Michelangelo was chosing the best material for his masterpieces.
